National Observance Day: National Day for the Conservation of Crabs

Did you know?

CRAB 1On Thursday June 25, we celebrate the National Day for the Conservation of Crabs!

The Ministry of the Environment created this annual observance day in 2011 with the aim to educate Dominicans about the importance of conserving crabs and protecting their natural habitat.

The observance day was proposed due to the fact that species of crabs, such as Palomas Cave, Zumba, Pelu and Cangrejo Moro, had been disappearing as a result of overfishing. In light of this the Ministry of Environment issued Executive Decrees 2515-72 and 813-03, and resolution 18-2008 to permanently prohibit fishing these species.
